My opponent said he could check my graveyard while having the option to respond to the card (chain), thus making it useless.

Please fix that.

As I said, he did it.

In real life you're not going to say "oh wait, I have a respond, let me check your graveyard for a sec. Hmmm nah, nevermind, I won't respond, but now I know your monster".
