So... with the new update that card has changed.

Here's a part of it's effect:

"Once per turn, during the End Phase: Send this card to the Graveyard, and if you do, Special Summon 1 "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard, ignoring its Summoning conditions."

With the new update I'm forced to activate this effect at the end phase when my "Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" is banished or when I have used a card with the effect that I cannot special summon anymore during my turn. (So no special summon of sphere mode but forced to send to graveyard)

Before the update, I could have kept "Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix" if my sphere mode is banished or with a card that prevents me to special summon.

I have tried with 2 metalfoes pendulum cards:

Pendulum Effect : Once per turn: You can target 1 other face-up card you control; destroy it, and if you do, Set 1 "Metalfoes" Spell/Trap Card directly from your Deck.

I could not activate the effect if I didn't have at least one Metalfoes spell/trap in the deck.

So I can't understand why Immortal Phoenix's effect is activated when the condition after "and if you do" is not met.

Phoenix Mode is mandatory and has to activate.

I know that phoenix mode effect has to activate... BUT if you did not meet the condition "and if you do" which is to special summon sphere mode. It can't be activated right? I tested with other cards and I found that if you did not fulfill the requirement "and if you do" you cannot use it's effect.

It has to activate, regardless of whether its effect resolves properly or not.

... Then I should be able to activate "Igknight" or "Metalfoes" pendulum effect regardless of conditions which I cannot. Why?

Igknights and Metalfoes aren't mandatory, I don't understand what you are trying to tell me.

I mean... I should be able to activate metalfoes' pendulum effect "You can target 1 other face-up card you control; destroy it, and if you do, ...". But I can't if I don't fulfill the condition after "and if you do".

Why can't I use it's effect to destroy another face-up card I control then? Don't tell me that it's "not mandatory", it clearly states "You can".

"You can" means its optional. Phoenix Mode is mandatory.

Quote:

Once per turn, during the End Phase: Send this card to the Graveyard, and if you do, Special Summon 1 "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard, ignoring its Summoning conditions.

Lack of "You can" or so means it's mandatory.

Since it's optional why can't I use it?

Optional Effects can be chosen to activate, but you can't activate an effect that won't be able to resolve fully. So you cannot use the scale effect of a Metalfoes to destroy if you have no cards to set.

Mandatory Effects activate regardless of whether you can resolve it fully or not. Even if you cannot special summon with Phoenix Mode it has to activate.

I see... Finally got an explanation.

Another deck goes to the trash bin...
